Finding inspiration in synthesis and sound collage, Spirit Lights is the ambient project of Joshua MacGregor (one half of electronic/dance duo Dream Coast). After the sudden shutdown of clubs in 2020, Joshua found himself drawn to the stillness of ambient music, soon amassing a private collection of analogue synth recordings.

“Like so many others I was a little lost in 2020-21 and found I needed a new creative direction. Clubs shut, Dream Coast work came to a halt and I found myself alone with my Prophet 6 and Moog modular gear. I let the synths lead the way and challenged myself to record a song or sketch each week. Piecing together selected fragments from those sessions, the first Spirit Lights EP captures a time of great change and self-discovery.”

Opener ‘Sun Arps’ begins with polyrhythmic phases that climax with a cascade of warm arpeggios. ‘Calm Under Fire’ is a meditative track featuring monolithic bass and lead. Synthesizer lines weave in and out of focus in ‘Pearls’, a reflection on ephemerality. The release concludes with lush chords and modular warbling in the gorgeous ‘Slow Motion’.
